Apple Pie Bread Pudding

Bread pudding is appropriately named because the dish is bread based.  It is typically served as a dessert, however, savory bread puddings are delicious too. Bread pudding, either sweet or savory, is a very easy recipe to make. Typically it is made with day old bread soaked in a mixture of cream, eggs, sugar, butter, and spices. It is similar to making French toast only instead of dipping the bread into the creamy mixture and then pan frying, you simply cut the bread into cubes and submerge it into the mixture and then bake like a casserole in the oven. Baking time will vary, but it is generally about 45 minutes to an hour.

Bread pudding is one of my favorite desserts because it is so easy to make and the flavor combinations are endless! Because of the relatively long bake time, my Apple Pie Bread Pudding fills the air with the aroma of sweet cinnamon and warm apples that lingers long after the baking timer goes off. Once cooled ever so slightly, this dessert is ready to serve! You'll want to savor every bite of this warm apple dessert dripping in sweet maple cream sauce.

I honestly don't know if there is a better dessert than bread pudding. It's so easy to make and the flavor combinations are endless! I think my favorite is this Apple Pie Bread Pudding with Maple Cream Sauce. Although, I mostly serve this recipe for dessert it would make an impressive breakfast casserole too. I especially love that this recipe can be prepped ahead of time and baked shortly before serving!

SweeTango Apples

I look forwward to SweeTango apple season every year! With the unmistakable crunch and apple-y juiciness like no other apple ever, the SweeTango is hands down the favorite in our home! One loud bite into a SweeTango apple coats your palate with apple juice. You'll think you've bitten into a juicy citrus fruit, but it's really an apple! The SweeTango apple has become my favorite baking apple. In addition to this bread pudding recipe, I've also used it in recipes like my Puff Pastry Apple Tart and my Apple Pie Crescent Rolls.
  • Taste - SweeTango apples are exceptionally crunchy and sweet with just a hint of tartness. The thought of biting into a SweeTango is enough to make my mouth-water. The SweeTango’s distinct taste and quality is a result of carefully crossing the sweet Honeycrisp and the tangy Zestar! apple varieties to create the SweeTango apple. Premiering in grocery stores nationwide in 2009, the SweeTango is a relatively new variety.
  • Crunch -  Crunch is important to me. A crunchy apple is just more satisfying. There is no mistaking the crunch of a SweeTango apple! It is actually in the Guinness Book of World Records for the "loudest crunch of an apple"! How cool is that?!
  • SeasonSweeTango apples are available from September to November, so be sure to look for them in stores. Your family will love them and you'll love it when you see them reaching for a healthier snack option!

Bursting with flavor from the warm apples, sweet cinnamon, and the irresistible maple cream sauce, you'll have a hard time finding someone who doesn't fall in love with this dessert!

Ingredients

Bread Pudding

  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 3 eggs, large
  • 1 stick of unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 SweeTango apples peeled and sliced
  • 10 regular sized hamburger buns cut into cubes

Maple Cream Sauce

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 stick unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon maple extract or add pure maple syrup to your liking
  • small pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F and spray a 9x11" baking dish with baking spray or butter lightly.
  2. In a large mixing bowl combine 2 cups milks, 1 1/2 cups sugar, and 3 eggs. Whisk until well mixed and smooth. Add 1 stick of melted butter, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1 tablespoon of cinnamon, and 1/2 teaspoon of kosher salt. Mix to combine.
  3. Add half of the bread cubes to the egg mixture and press down so all the cubes are submerged. Add the other half of the bread cubes, pressing down lightly to moisten.
  4. Turn half of the moistened bread cubes into the baking dish and top with half of the apple slices. Top that with the remaining bread cubes and top with the other half of the apples.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for about an hour until the bread pudding is nicely browned and slightly crispy on top. When you press lightly in the middle of the bread pudding it should bounce back. You don't want it too jiggly or wet in the center, so cook it longer as needed. Mine typically takes a good hour to be cooked the way we like it.
  6. Make the maple cream sauce while the bread pudding is cooking. To make the sauce combine 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 stick butter, 1 cup heavy cream, and a small pinch of salt in a medium saucepan. Bring to boil then reduce the heat to medium and allow the sauce to boil gently for about 5-10 minutes until reduced slightly. Give it a taste and adjust the maple flavor to your liking. Add more salt little by little if needed.
Note: I learned to use hamburger buns in bread pudding from Cowboy Kent Rollins. I enjoyed his Vanilla Bread Pudding with Whiskey Cream Sauce so much, that I only make my bread pudding with hamburger buns now. The texture is perfectly creamy and a bit lighter than other bread pudding I've made.
