Summer is the best time to get your grill on! There's not much better than getting outside, firing up the grill and breaking bread with family and friends. One of my favorite grilling recipes is Honey Hot Wings, because eating with your hands is also a favorite summer pastime.

The sauce on my hot wings is a unique blend of honey for sweetness, El Yucateco Red Hot Sauce to bring the heat, and butter for richness. The sweet heat will make your mouth water and have you coming back for more! I look for reasons to invite folks over and make these wings. They are perfect for Father's Day, the 4th of July, family reunions, or just because... because you have a craving for all this deliciousness! Who needs a reason to eat hot wings? Not me!!

We do love our hot wings, but sometimes I find the sauce too vinegary. Don't get me wrong, acidity is necessary, but it overpowers in some commercial hot sauces. Since I discovered El Yucateco Red Hot Sauce I use it all the time! The vinegar doesn't overpower, so the flavor of the fresh habanero peppers and tomatoes really shines through. I first used this sauce when I made my Caramelized Onion Dip, and I was hooked! This hot sauce really elevated the flavor of my onion dip, so when I was making my Honey Hot Wings I knew it would be perfect! It's a tasty all-around sauce that can be used in a variety of ways. I like that!

I encourage you to get outside and cook these wings on the grill for maximum flavor and fun! The wings caramelize nicely when cooked on the grill and that caramelized flavor combines perfectly with the honey butter sauce to create a unique taste sensation that will make these wings disappear quickly! The sauce is lick-your-plate and fingers clean kinda good! No napkins needed ;)! To make these wings, invite your fun friends over and fire up the grill to medium heat. Season the wings with cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper...

Cook the chicken wings on the preheated grill until cooked through and juices run clear, 20 to 30 minutes depending on the size of the wings. While cooking, baste the wings using 1/2 cup of honey.

Prepare the hot sauce by melting 1/2 cup butter in a large microwave safe bowl.

Mix well, and enjoy that beautiful deep red color. You can tell by looking at this sauce it is rich and delicious, but definitely give it a taste and adjust the flavors to your liking. Add more hot sauce if you like 'em fire-in-your-belly hot. For a little more heat try the El Yucateco Green Hot Sauce, and if you really want to amp up the heat I recommend trying the El Yucateco XXX Habanero Hot Sauce (Kutbilik).

Remove the wings from the grill and immediately toss them in the hot honey butter sauce to coat.

Return the wings to the grill to set the sauce and baste some more while cooking until sauce starts to caramelize. Remove to a serving platter and garnish with chopped cilantro. Enjoy!

I'd love to hear your favorite way to celebrate summer with friends and family? Please leave me a comment with your summer fun ideas!!

Honey Hot Wings

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds chicken wings
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (or more to taste)
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup clover honey
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup of El Yucateco Red Hot Sauce
  • Freshly chopped cilantro for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat an outdoor grill to medium heat and lightly oil grate. Wash and dry the wings. Season the meat with cayenne, salt, and pepper to your liking.
  2. Cook the chicken wings on the preheated grill until cooked through and juices run clear, 20 to 30 minutes depending on the size of the wings. While cooking, baste the wings using 1/2 cup of honey.
  3. Prepare the hot sauce by melting 1/2 cup butter in a large microwave safe bowl. Add in the remaining 1/2 cup of honey and 1/2 bottle of Red Habanero Hot Sauce and mix well. Give it a taste and adjust the flavors to your liking. Add more hot sauce if you like 'em fire-in-your-belly hot. I like to feel a little heat, but I don't like them lip-swelling hot ;).
  4. Remove the wings from the grill and immediately toss them in the hot honey butter sauce to coat. Return the wings to the grill to set the sauce and baste some more while cooking until sauce starts to caramelize. Remove to a serving platter and garnish with chopped cilantro. Enjoy!
  5. If the weather doesn't cooperate and you need to cook them in the oven, no worries! Here's the how-to: Preheat the oven to 375°F. Use a rack placed on a cookie sheet. Place wings on the rack in a single layer, season with cayenne, salt, and black pepper. Baste with 1/2 cup honey and cook for about 30 minutes until cooked through and juices run clear. Toss cooked wings in honey butter sauce and then place the wings back on the rack and place under the broiler for a minute or so until the sauce starts to caramelize. Watch them closely while under the broiler or they will burn to a crispy critter quickly!
Yield: 4-6 Servings
Prep Time: 15 mins.
Cook time: 20 mins.
Total time: 35 mins.
