Don and I sure didn't! We ate half of it in one afternoon! No doubt we would have eaten every last ounce of it if not for running out of chips! So be sure to learn from my mistake and have plenty of chips on hand 'cause you're gonna need 'em!

If you're not a fan of spicy foods, no worries! This dip isn't spicy, but the hot sauce sure made a difference in the flavor! Sure, you can make it spicy by adjusting the amount of heat you put in it, but for me, this just needed a boost in flavor.

As soon as I mixed in the spicy goodness of the habenero sauce, I knew I had a winner! This creamy dip will be the hit at all the parties. So be sure to make extra if feeding a crowd! #SauceOn!

I had most of the ingredients on hand to make this creamy party dip. I just had to caramelize some onions and pick up the El Yucateco hot sauce at Publix, and I'm glad I did! The spicy sauce brought all of the ingredients together and elevated the flavor of this dip!

This hot sauce is small in stature but big on taste! You'll find it in the International Food aisle at Publix. This photo should help you locate it....

We really enjoy chips with our dip, because that's how we roll...

...but this dip would be quite tasty with veggies too, and Don even spread it on his sandwich!

Creamy Caramelized Onion Dip

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 cups yellow onions, sliced thinly
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 tablespoon freshly minced garlic
  • 1 1/2 cups sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 teaspoon El Yucateco Hot Sauce
  • 1/4 cup chopped green onions or chives
  • 1/4 teaspoon white pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt or more to taste
  • Garnish with freshly chopped parsley and green onions

Instructions

  1. Cut the onions in half through the root and remove the skins. The slice into thin slices. Heat a skillet over mid-high heat and melt 2 tablespoons unsalted butter. Put sliced onions in the skillet with 1/4 teaspoon salt and stir. Cook, stirring, until the onions begin to soften and start to release their juices. Reduce heat and continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until nicely browned. This will take about 30-45 minutes depending on how high your heat is. I like to caramelize onions low and slow, so it usually takes about 40 minutes for me. The deeper caramelized they are the more flavor your dip will have. When the onions are just about ready, add 1/2 tablespoon freshly minced garlic and saute for about a minute or two until the garlic softens. Remove from heat and set aside to cool.
  2. While the onions are cooking, mix 1 1/2 cups sour cream, 1/2 cup mayonnaise, 1/4 teaspoon El Yucateco Hot Sauce (more to taste), 1/4 cup chopped green onions, 1/4 teaspoon white pepper, and 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt together in a bowl. Add the caramelized onions and mix to combine well. Refrigerate several hours or, better yet, overnight before serving. Garnish with chopped green onions and parsley and serve with chips and/or veggies. Enjoy!
Yield: about 2 cups
Prep Time: 5 mins.
Cook time: 40 mins.
Total time: 45 mins.
