DIY Pumpkin Topiary

posted by Marion@Life Tastes Good on 2013-10-30

DIY Pumpkin Topiary: It is finally starting to cool down here in FL! We had our first taste of fall weather this past weekend and it got me motivated to decorate just a little!

I rummaged through our storage closet and found all of our fall decorations and went to work!

Last year I made this Pumpkin Topiary and it was so easy! It is definitely my kind of DIY project!

It looks great! Requires few materials and no gluing or nailing or any real tools! and it is easy to store and use every year! You can certainly use real pumpkins for this, but that will require a little more work and $$$, so I recommend the faux pumpkins you can pick up at your local craft store.

Materials
  • 3 various sized pumpkins. Small, medium, and large
  • utility knife
  • garland of fall leaves (4-6')
  • wire or twisty ties
  • urn type planter
Directions
  1. Cut 3 different pieces from your fall garland (you might have some leftover to use elsewhere depending on the length). Be sure you cut them so you have one piece that fits around the bottom of each pumpkin with a little extra to secure the ends.
  2. Cut a hole into the bottom of the small and medium pumpkin. The faux pumpkins cut much easier than I expected! The hole will need to be just large enough to fit over top of the stem of the pumpkin it will sit atop.

◀ 3. Place the largest pumpkin on top of the urn/planter. Wrap the longest piece of garland around the bottom and twist the two ends together or use wire or a twisty tie to hold together in the back of the pumpkin.

4. Place the medium pumpkin atop the large pumpkin (the hole you cut should fit over the stem), and wrap the medium garland piece around the middle where the two pumpkins meet. Secure in the back. ▶

◀ 5. Top the medium pumpkin with the smallest pumpkin and wrap the last piece of garland around the middle where the pumpkins meet and secure in the back.

NOTE: If you want to ensure they won't topple over you can hot glue the pumpkins together. Mine are under a covered porch, so I haven't had a problem with wind tossing them all over the neighborhood. They've never even fallen over, so I choose to leave them as is for easier storage.
