Living in Florida, we are very familiar with Cuban sandwiches, aka Cubanos, but even if you don't live in Florida you may have seen the movie Chef where you, no doubt, were left craving a Cuban sandwich! If you haven't had the pleasure of watching the movie, I definitely recommend it. It's not just for foodies (have I mentioned how I really don't like that word?). It is centered on a chef with lots of wonderful food featured in the movie, but the bigger picture is a lighthearted movie with a good story that leaves you feeling happy...and hungry! Be sure to fill your belly for viewing this movie! You've been warned!!

I recommend making these Pulled Pork Cuban Sandwiches and enjoying them while you watch the movie. That sounds like a good plan. I think I'll watch it again so I can do just that! <smile>

There are many variations to a Cuban Sandwich, but most, like this one, are hot pressed sandwiches with pork, ham, cheese, mustard, and pickles on a sesame seed bun... no, I'm just kidding, it's on a Cuban baguette. Some jingles are just to hard to shake, I guess ;). Anywho, this sandwich is so simple to make and very versatile too!

Typically, a Cuban Sandwich will have Mojo marinated sliced pork which is absolutely perfect, but when I have leftovers there are no rules! I try to make something completely different from the original dish, so it doesn't feel like we're eating leftovers at all, and I definitely did that with this Cuban sandwich using my Beer Braised Pulled Pork leftovers. The Barbecue flavor of the pulled pork mingled nicely with the traditional flavors of the Cuban Sandwich, and using the leftovers, made it a super easy and quick dinner too! I like that!

psst... Don't tell anyone, but we actually preferred this sandwich with my Beer Braised Pulled Pork (click for recipe) over the traditional Mojo marinated pork!

To make this sandwich, heat a cast-iron skillet over medium heat. Slice your bread in half. I used an 8" Cuban roll, but a hoagie roll will do just nicely. Slice in half horizontally and then vertically to make 2 halves of a sandwich. Lightly butter the cut side of each piece of bread. Heat up the pulled pork in a microwave safe bowl or heat it in the skillet with a couple slices of ham. Keep the meat warm until ready to assemble the sandwich.

Place the bread slices in the skillet, butter side down over medium heat. Place another heavy skillet on top and press down. This will flatten the bread and also help it to brown. It should be nicely browned within 30 seconds to a minute. Watch it to make sure it doesn't burn.

Lightly butter the top side of each piece of bread and flip over in the skillet...

Layer pulled pork, ham, pickles, and cheese slices on the top bread pieces. Spread a thin layer of mustard on the bottom bread pieces and place them on top of the sandwiches. Cover the sandwiches with a piece of parchment and place a heavy skillet on top, pressing down, until the cheese is nicely melted and the bread is lightly toasted. About 30 seconds to a minute.

  1. Delicious! I have had Cuban sandwiches in Key West, but my family had not tried them until I found this recipe. I did use your beer pork bar-b-que. As of a week ago, this is now a family favorite.

  2. I made these tonight. They were great! I like to buy pork shoulder when it goes on sale, but I get burned out eating pulled pork sandwiches all the time. This was a nice change and definitely a keeper!
