Caprese Sandwich Recipe

My Caprese Sandwich is a simple recipe that is big on flavor! The softest, most delicious ciabatta roll topped with fresh basil pesto, tomatoes, and creamy mozzarella cheese all drizzled with balsamic glaze just might be my new favorite sandwich! My mouth is watering just thinking about it!

I was inspired to make this Caprese Sandwich after enjoying one from Trader Joe's while we were traveling. Granted, I was super hungry after traveling all day, but one bite of that sandwich, and I was hooked! I'm always skeptical about buying a pre-made sandwich, and I'm usually disappointed, so my Trader Joe's Caprese Sandwich was a pleasant surprise. I ate almost all of it by myself. Don finished it up for me <smile>. It was a BIG sandwich!

I didn't waste anytime after arriving home from our trip. I picked up fresh basil, tomatoes, and mozzarella the very next day in preparation of making my own version of this tastiest of sandwiches.

I spotted some Ciabatta Rolls at the Publix Bakery and decided to use those to hold my sandwich fixings. Although, I hadn't tried these rolls before, I figured a good Italian bread would be a perfect fit for my Italian sandwich, and you know what?! I WAS RIGHT!! #NotTheFirstTime #WontBeTheLast <smile>

They are the perfect bread for a Caprese Sandwich, imho. Strong enough to hold up to the bold ingredients, yet soft enough to satisfy my affinity for light, beautifully soft bread. They are Don approved too, so I use these rolls for everything now! FYI - A BLT is delicious on Publix Ciabatta Rolls!

In Italian, Caprese Salad basically means Salad of Capri as it originates from the Island of Capri and uses the finest ingredients from Italy. Whoever thought to put these flavors together is a genius! The fresh beefsteak tomatoes, basil, and creamy mozzarella create such a pleasing flavor, and even though it is not traditional to the dish, I do love drizzling on tangy balsamic glaze. It pulls all the flavors together and balances out the sweetness. It truly is one of the great flavor combos! (imho)

Summer is the perfect time to make this sandwich as all of the fresh ingredients are readily available, and it is no bake too, so it won't heat up the house! If you've never had the pleasure of enjoying these classic flavors, you are truly missing out! I know it sounds so simple, but the complex flavors of this combo are not to be missed! Enjoy!

  1. Your homemade pesto and drizzle of balsamic -- not to mention Ciabatta rolls "strong (and soft) enough to satisfy my affinity for light, beautifully soft bread" -- made a believer out o' me! Sooooo tasty sounding (and looking) and an innovative take on the "classic" Caprese salad. Thank you!
